There is a Meeting of the Kindred Spirits coming up March 29th! And
we do need to see some more Positive well integrated Female Energy in
this group who can work closely with others.

http://edenvillage.net/18.htm

We are still looking to organize a group of volunteers to
help out some good folks one day out of the week, with some
organic gardening and we still do need someone to take Minutes
at the next meeting.

It would be possible, I would think, if there is a single female or
two out there who is cool about living closer to the Earth then
I may be able to provide a place for you to live, for
maybe 6 months out of the year up where I live in Northern
California.

If you can simply come to our next meeting on March 29th. - T

first steps in learning all of this?

Hello, all ...

I'm a software developer by profession (C++ and Perl, mostly), but my cypher knowledge is very spotty; I know how to do super-basic stuff like set up ssh keys, but don't really know the difference between DSA and RSA, other than one is supposedly a bit more secure than the other. I know what a prime number is, and know that if one applies a certain bit of mathematical magic to two very large primes, it is very difficult to arrive at one given only the other. That, i'm afraid, is about it (does ROT13 count? <smile>).

The truth is, though I used to be a math nut, those skills have atrophied a bit -- i'm lucky if I can remember the law of cosines on any particular day, much less anything even a bit higher than basic trig. These skills just aren't needed very often in developing the software I do (streaming media -- not the codecs themselves, but making sure their resultant streams arrive on time at their destinations), and since I run *nix boxes at home (Mac OSX and Debian), behind a firewall (Airport Express base station), i've never had a problem with viruses or anything like that.

Why my desire to learn more about this, then? Aside from intellectual curiosity, I find the current <ahem> administrations' policies very disturbing, and though i've nothing to hide, that doesn't mean I want my door open for all. The desire for privacy is not a smoking gun for some illegal or immoral act, and should not be seen as such. It is merely the desire to protect one facet of our individuality. If you ask me, i'll show you anything about me you want to know. If you pry, I won't be as respectful (if at all).

So, what should I start reading? Are tutorials and / or example code available to illustrate some of the concepts i'll run into? Where?

Regards,

John

The trashing of various algorithms

I was recently catching up on my crypto reading, and some of the developments over the last year or so have got me a bit worried.

MD4, RIPEMD: So broken that you can produce many colliding messages per second on a 100 MHz Intel box. You really can't get much more broken than that.

MD5: Not quite as bad. A colliding message can be created in 8 hours on a 1.6 GHz laptop, but there are new improvements which will cut that time to under an hour.

HAVAL: Broken too, not that anyone uses it.

SHA-1: Has only been knocked down from 160 bits of security to 149 (as of what was public knowledge last year), but it is so similar to MD5 in most respects that I really don't expect it to last much longer at all.

PKI: You can now break a 1024-bit key in under a year on a machine which costs under $1M. Doesn't matter if all you're talking about is GPG-encrypted love letters. But if you're a CA which has signed tens of thousands of website certificates with a 1024-bit key... very ugly indeed. ATM machine networks, electronic voting, all sorts of things have been designed with the idea that a 1024-bit key should hold up practically forever. I wouldn't doubt that there are still plenty of nukes in the world that could be launched with a 1024-bit key.

RSA no longer talks about using certificates to authenticate websites, they are promoting switching to hardware tokens which authenticate both the end-user and the website to each other. Like a SecurID token or the equivalent, except that the website has to produce a pseudorandom number for the user to scrutinize, as well as the other way around.

I dunno... I've been injecting myself into the middle of HTTPS transactions at work for a few years, in the course of penetration testing, and when you add all this stuff in on top of tried-and-true MITM attack techniques, I just have to start looking at online crypto-based security as a sham at this point. Something to give consumers a false sense of security.

Is anyone else getting that feeling?

I'm no Cypherpunks, just an ordinary Joe...however, I've got a problem and I'm hoping someone here can help out.

Twice in the last three months I've lost all settings and bookmarks for Mozilla Firefox. The second time, I also lost all e-mail archives in Mozilla Thuderbird (luckily no addresses). Over the last 7-9 days...emails have been disappearing out of my mailbox.

What am I dealing with here? I thought my virus scan and firewalls were up-to-date. I don't even know where to begin.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Hi,

If I may ask for your advice :

I would like to dev from Bottom Up an app.

It has to have scalability in user number.

Real time elements integration.

And tools that can me added, modified and or upgraded as you go.

MySQL back end.

Simple interface.

and

SUPER STRONG CRYPTO as the app will not be sold but given

Do YOU think that Lisp is a good choice ?

What is the learning curve for it if you could give even an erroneus evaluation of a rate.

1 - 12 months.

Any other app for a better, quicker solution.

Thank you for your patience.

Now I have evidence that you threatening my security and I'll have to report you to the authority now, which was probably a long log time ago after you read this, who knows. I don't think crossing your fingers will help you. Read the book High Risk Children without a conscious, for women that are raped or who are prostitutes because they are rejected by managers for normal jobs because of their poor history records and are opposed to discrimination in marriage and gave birth to people like Charles Manson being at the age 15 for the mother was a prostitute too. And know the difference between Charles Manson and the elephant man who the elephant man was probably born in a normal family suffered allot too for real fuck ups are the anti-pro choice people and not the children and maybe not even the parents unless they had choices and is very anti-Semitic, anti-Jewish, and is fascist for not to have choices after all Hitler threw all his alternatives for peace and subjected to killing himself for that is when he finally decided to become pro-choice for in the Jewish torah god granted us free will for all and to control the free will of others is very fascist and offensive to our creator for we are not to be robots but human instead, and your attempt to block freedom of speech would actually not only prevent you from knowing your true friends but your enemies too. In the name of the first amendment it’s obvious you are no true patriot for you obviously don't respect children or the first amendment but think you do or you don't care for some of us care not to degrade ourselves that way, for I'm sorry if you think so because the church can be very manipulative and make you believe cruel things are just because it's called morality, but I don't see how you can't have choices to change and at least support the natural morning after pill which I never excluded in my topics, logs or posts. Some children are crack babies, do you want to contribute to this, do you really think your helping out life, think about it. We are sick of Big Brother 1984 and remember this conversation is not to be confidential but public instead and will be seen all over the internet for if you don't think this is real evidence then neither are my blogs, the posts the email, ect. And remember gay rights not gay pride and equal rights for all sentient beings. and peace to all. For if you can imagine a painful circumcision I had one as a baby but do not remember the pain ever being there, and can still feel lots of pleasure there, it obviously it works too, if you don’t believe me ask someone else who was circumcised, to know their experiences, watch the porn stars if you have to, thank you. I’m not saying men can’t be circumcised, you decide yourself. For why abortion be so painful if you can't remember the circumcision and still feel pleasure there.

pro choice in order to prevent unplanned pregnancy and descrimination in mariage

condoms and natural morning after pills hopefully you choice of many different types too. Then should be in vending machines in bathrooms directly where you use the toilet there nobody has to be seen or feel imbarased for that is also a reason why people don’t make those choices and it is really nobody elses business otherwise you are violated these people meaning teens too who are people too and also should have a sign on the vending machine saying best to use the vending machine for it could be noisy to flush the toilet while you access your choice of purchase, or their could also be otherthings in there are healthy that have nothing to do with sexuality so even then if the vending machine still makes a loud noise of your purchase then it will still not be obvious of what you pruchased behind doors, and I don’t know if young women are comfortable with others knowing about their need of maxi pads and if so that should also be in the vending machine in the woens bathroom. Another idea for something not so personel in a bathroom atr vending machine could be buss passes and phone books or other needs of transportation for even adults feel uncomfortable having stranger at the front desk of a liquer store suspecting what they are doing and I don’t think it’s right to hand them out as much as the advantage of the vending machine idea. Phone number for abortion clinics however it should not be restricted as just an abortion clinic and women should have choices so if they are not comfortable with a certain nurse or doctor hopefully being female instead of male for this job should still be confidential and the information is not even to be given to the authority other polls describing ages if the client is willing to tell the nurse or doctor otherwise you violated other people personal lives and their body.
People can say this has nothing to do with them but a complete selfless act out of compassion for concerns millions that this is personal issue and should be confidential if there are no choices then we have to protest and one good way that the signs being held up is introducing a book hopefully updated called High Risk, children without a conscience. Also people fight back against discrimination in marriages because that will harm the whole family is is most likely to happen in unplanned pregnancy.

Natural remedies being organic especially morning after pills meaning no pesticides and are more effective then genetically enginered herps or spices or a combination or maybe some fungi according to M.D.s are much safer then synthetic drugs for information try looking in the health sections in bookstores or libraries if you can’t afford and sometimes some older books have some information that newer books of reference don’t have sometimes they are outdated or may have actually have more information.

This doen’t end here for would you know there are certain monkeys in rainforests who diet on natural morning after pills and that India is not only overpopulated with monkeys but people too who are sometimes if not the monkey tend to get really vicious which is normal and fight over food and sometimes die telephone wires being electrocuted.

No we do not encourage sex and we hope our diet especcialy for children and teens get natural organic foods in their diet that don’t have aphrodisac qualities for even without aphrodisiacs how would you know for most peoples diets consists of cloves, ginger and I believe cinnamon which are essential for procreation and to be used moderately for some people may never have any interest in pro-creating when they are in love and will lose that natural sense of pleasure to conceive a child which will reverse things to minimum of zero population which could mean a dieing race for that is not the only cause of genocide. So most people including children don’t have choices to spend some quality time or the F.D.A. probably regulated a food that was not accepted by them in competition with natural food industry or the natural organic ecology in other countries which is a shame because that’s how we should unite in the name of thanksgiving which should be festive everyday. Not only that but our natural pharmacies are being destroyed by evil corporations destroying our alternatives and varieties of foods at the dinner table and overexploiting something else exploiting it in the name of greed which is obvious. For every second an acre of rainforest is cleared sometime for cattle or mining which could contribute to slavery or denying the use of electrical cars or other environmentally friendly transportation by digging for oil by clearing more forrest away which contribute to global warming which is what happened in New Orleans where half of the national guard was not there to assist the poor mostly black but instead was out fighting for more oil contributing to more global warming. So do your troops a favor, send them back home and if they are so brave, make them firefighters instead to protect lives here including the forest for less tree’s and Nasa Bio-home research knows this pretty well that we are very interdependent on our ecology for if there is more indoor air pollution then outdoors, imagine what it would be like when no ecology left.

Hugs not war
Organic food not bombs
Greenpeace international
Peace trees Vietnam
Citizen’s commission on human rights
Animal rights for they are not to be used for profit but only to be used entirely if kill it to prevent overpopulation therefore overexploitation knocks the scale of justice out of balance which destroy equality and you can imagine ecology but if the natives of that land are know squatters and are forced to pay rent for their own land which is humans rights abuses and will eventually force them to not even have to overexploit one of their goods, being soil, quality water, trees, plants, animals and sometimes their children being kidnapped and made slaves to work in coal mines for diamonds too for Catholics too use for engagement rings as well as other Christians and non Christians. Even Chocholate field’s children slave in to make Easter eggs. Hopefully this has stopped or is not completely true but you don’t want to believe in the big Pinocchio lies either and be sheltered from the suffering by being couch potatoes in your own kingdom instead.
For more information about childhood slavery meaning adults too, look up national geographic on the internet and type modern slaves in the national geographic search engine.
Here is another web page you can investigate on

Alternative to RSA?

As an alternative to pre-share secret keys, set up one node at a time, I have seen only RSA based asymetric key exchange based on the one RSA method using the Modulo function. Thus far, as far as I know, there have been no breaks against this. What happens if there is one? Isn't almost (or all) public key exchnage based on RSA now? Is there a backup strategy or alternative protocol? It would seem a potential commercial disaster if something this relied upon were broken.

48 hours to stop the broadcast flag

http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/003720.php

<<Responding to pressure from Hollywood, the FCC had adopted a rule requiring future digital television (DTV) tuners to include "content protection" (aka DRM) technologies. All makers of HDTV receivers would have been required build their devices to watch for a broadcast "flag" embedded in programs by copyright holders. When it comes to digital recording, it would be Hollywood's DRM way or the highway. Want to burn that recording digitally to a DVD to save hard drive space? Sorry, the DRM lock-box won't allow it. How about sending it over your home network to another TV? Not unless you rip out your existing network and replace it with DRMd routers. Kind of defeats the purpose of getting a high definition digital signal, doesn't it?

...EFF's action alert, geared to people with senators on the committee, is here. Public Knowledge also provides a number of excellent talking points in an email urging readers to phone their senators:

* There has been No Debate in the Appropriations Committee over the Broadcast Flag.

* Broadcast Flag is Not Narrow: There is no "narrow" way to implement the broadcast flag scheme because it necessarily puts the FCC in the role of gatekeeper, having to approve and certify every technology that might carry DTV -- computers, cellphones, gameboys, etc. As proof of the broad scope of the flag, when petitioned to exempt lawful uses of digital television, the FCC declined saying "practical and legal difficulties of determining which types of broadcast content merit protection from indiscriminate redistribution and which do not."

...* Limits Fair Use: As the May 11, 2005 Congressional Research Service report noted, the flag will prevent important fair uses, like the ability of teachers to engage in distance learning and the ability of individuals to email fair use portions of works to themselves and others.>>

sorry for the short notice, but damn. please contact your senators and send this everywhere!

Prime factors combos

I have a quesstion on some of the mathmetics of asymetric encryption / key schemes. The underlying math seemes to be predicated on the complexity and CPU limmitations of calculating all the possible prime # combinations neccary to land on the almost random radial remainders which themselves are not subject to reversal.

Does this not assume each "prime crak" is a seperate problem, with unique math and proccessing power based on a standalone calculation requirements? What if the underlying math (and calculations) are done as a whole in some EGP (evil government person's) cellar on a supercomputer generating giant look up tables. Spending the ongoing CPU horsepower for factors and remainders based on the public half of keys would it seem be able to solve in advance some of the math required for "real time" key breaks through simple look ups. Since there are diminishing amounts of primes as numer values increase, this should seem particularly true.

the fuckers are trying to reinstate a provision that has already been found illegal in court. they want the ability to compel Internet service providers to turn over information about their customers or subscribers as part of its fight against terrorism.

fuck that noise!

this is shaping up to be a right ugly issue: there is a law in MN that declares the possession of encryption software to be proof of criminal intent.

i wish i was making this up.

anyhoo....the senate is on spring break and we can get a lot of stuff done while they are. for one thing, many of them are at home, so you could visit your senators' office. stage a demonstration out front. whatever.

i am going to call my city council and convince them to condemn the patriot act, as New York and several other cities have done!
it would also be fun to have the senators return to a mountain of faxes on the issue! heh.

but mostly, please, just spread the word!

I'm new to this tribe as well as to cypher stuff in general; just trying to learn about it all, and noticed this tribe hadn't had a posting in awhile, so...

I was just wondering what is everyone's favorite algorithm for encrypting? Blowfish? Rijndael? something else?

Armored Car Encryption?

If you saw an armored car transferring your bank's receipts to a
"vault" housed in a cardboard box on a park bench, would the
strength of the armored car cause you to trust the safety of the
funds?

-Chapter 27, "Practical Unix Security",
Simson Garfinkel and Gene Spafford,
O'Reilly & Associates, 1996

This chapter shows that something as simple as eavesdropping can
eliminate all the benefits of encryption.

How secure is your operating system?
How secure is your web browser?
How secure is your physical computer?

It kind of reminds me of the card game of blackjack, where one can have a theoretical mathematical advantage if one counts cards and uses the correct strategy:

"It would be difficult to find a card game easier for a dealer to cheat at than blackjack."

Interesting thread emerging on how crypto, particularly crypto accessible to the general population and corporate entities alters or affects the relationsips and relative powers of people commerce, and government.

In my mind, it makes the bar for tapping higher, becuase now both the media and the key or scheme must be known, and that is a few extra steps. It also raises the cost of eavesdropping, and may essentially end systesm designed to listen in mass for certain vocabulary or sounds such as "bomb" or "attack."

How it affects governemts vis a vi each other and there populations, that probably is determined more by type and sophistication of the government. There is also the balance between law enforcement and organized crime to consider.

I should have titled this: For those who own Applied Cryptography and have yet to be able to implement anything in it. :)

Whatever the case, I sugguest picking up Practical Cryptography by the same author, Bruce Schneier (co authored by Neils Ferguson).

There is a lot of REAL WORLD advice for those of us who's work depends on the security of our product or service.

I'm fairly technical but I think that this book is a fairly easy read, especially if anyone's economically motivated (ie the work in the industry).

By the way, it's expensive.
